Dear WWW Visitors:

When St Gabriel School opened in 1948, our students trudged to class across sand dunes soon to be covered with rows of houses, all bursting with families as the post-war building boom came to San Francisco. Over the next decade, St.Gabriel became the largest Catholic elementary school west of the Mississippi with 1200 students, all from the surrounding neighborhood.

We are proud to be starting our fifty-ninth year of providing Catholic elementary education to our students. Over these years, we have adapted to new challenges and changed with the times while retaining our commitment to excellence in Christian education.

Today, 505 boys and girls are enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade with two classes in each grade and a morning and afternoon kindergarten. Our student body is drawn from throughout the city and northern peninsula as well as our Sunset and Parkside neighborhoods, and it reflects the racial and ethnic diversity of the Bay Area.

Our average class size is 28 students with full-time aides in kindergarten and first grades and part time service of aides in all other classes. All students participate in the religious education program in addition to the traditional elementary curriculum. There are full time specialist teachers for science, computer instruction, and physical education, part time math, music, and computers. A reading resource teacher, two learning specialists, and counselor complete the staff.

We have a fully equipped science room, an eMac/iMac computer lab with internet access, an Apple IIgs mini-lab, and classroom computer centers. In our busy library, we have Macintosh computers for research and writing projects. The library is automated for computer access to our collection. The entire school, computer lab, classrooms, library, and office, is networked for internet access.

After-school activities include Academic competition, CYO sports, Student Service Program, Student council, peer tutoring, robotics club, chess classes, choral group, dramatic musical productions, outreach groups, Science Fair, Speech Opportunities, Garden Committee, and piano lessons. Extended care is available from 7:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. each school day.

We value partnership between home and school in achieving our shared goals for our students. We seek ways to strengthen this partnership through parent involvement and parent education. Communication between parents and teachers is open, respectful, and mutually supportive, resulting in a positive learning environment and sound academic achievement.

From its founding, the mission of St. Gabriel School has been to provide Catholic elementary education which is responsive to the needs of the community we serve and true to this philosophy:

It is our belief that each student should cultivate a lifestyle based on the teachings of the Catholic faith, the experience of a Christian community, and the striving for truth. In collaboration with parents, the primary educators, our goal is that each student should achieve his/her religious, intellectual, social, psychological, aesthetic, and physical potential.

Open House will be on November 14, with tours at 8:30, 9:30, 10:30 A.M. and 1:15 P.M. for families interested in kindergarten for the following year, and on January 29, with tours at 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30 A.M. for all grades. For monthly School Tour days starting in October, check our Calendar of Events.

What you will see on this web site is only a brief introduction to our program and our community. We hope that you will visit us in person soon.

Sincerely,

Sister M. Pauline Borghello, R.S.M.
Principal
